Melissa Folly MChiro CCEP
Chiropractor
After graduating from the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic in 2010, Melissa spent three years in South Yorkshire where, along with developing her knowledge of chiropractic and patient management, she was able to get involved in the treatment of injured service men and women; treating patients with complicated trauma like amputation and brain injury.
Melissa completed an extra qualification in the treatment and management of the extremities and became a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (CCEP). Originally growing up in rural Gloucestershire, Melissa moved back in October 2013 when she joined the Spinavita team.
I take a holistic approach to patients, treating everyone individually whilst following the best evidence and research to create a treatment plan that aims to realistically reach patients goals and needs. I use a broad range of techniques and my experience to improve movement, strength, posture along with the aim to prevent any reoccurrence. I have developed a keen interest in the treatment and management of muscluloskeletal issues during pregnancy. A time when more than ever having good movement and symmetry throughout the body is key. Techniques I use include dry needling, taping and soft tissue work, in addition to manipulation, blocks, drops and activator.
Melissa is registered with GCC and a member of the BCA. And RCoC.
Let's learn more about Melissa
How did you first get interested in your field of work?
My Dad is a Farrier and would often have a bad back. Growing up I remember he would often be in discomfort, visit his Chiropractor and then be able to go on with his work feeling fine again. I later learnt that there was more to it than just the one treatment, but this was my first experience of chiropractic and is what lead me into applying to study Chiropractic.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Giving patients help and relief with their pain. When they think ‘nothing can be done to help’ or ‘they might have to live in pain’ very often this is not the case, and those moments when you see the weight of pain and fear lift of a patients shoulders is priceless!
What’s a common misconception about your area of expertise that you’d like to clear up?
‘Its all about being cracked’ its often a misconception that all we do is crack people. Whilst manipulation (the crack) can be part of a chiropractic treatment, there are many other techniques that we use alongside or instead of a manipulation to restore proper movement and function to the body.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?
Create a really relaxing environment of calm and do some yoga or breathing exercises, followed by some dark chocolate.
What’s your go-to snack during the workday?
Yogurt smoothie. Especially when I’m doing a morning shift. I like to start early and don’t like to eat as soon as I wake, so its great to have during a shift. It means I can pack in fruit, nut butter or seeds and is easy to digest 🙂
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Never be too proud to own mistakes, admit when you’re wrong or say sorry.
