Your Sports Massage questions answered
We know that booking a sports massage can sometimes raise questions — whether you’re an athlete, someone who exercises regularly, or simply dealing with everyday tension and tightness.
Sports massage isn’t just for elite performers. It can help with muscle recovery, injury prevention, postural strain, and general aches and pains. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions to help you feel confident and prepared before your appointment.
What are the benefits of sports massage?
Sports massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve flexibility, support recovery, and ease everyday aches and pains. It may also help prevent injury by addressing tightness and imbalances early. Many people find it beneficial for both performance and general wellbeing.
What should I expect during my massage session?
Your session will begin with a brief discussion about your symptoms, activity levels, and goals. Your therapist will assess the areas of concern and explain the treatment plan before beginning.
Sports massage often involves a combination of techniques such as deep tissue work, stretching, and targeted pressure to specific muscle groups. You may feel areas of tightness being worked through, but your therapist will always communicate with you to ensure the pressure is appropriate.
How long is a typical massage session?
Massage sessions can be booked as a 30 or 60 minute session. You can see all available options during the booking process.
Is sports massage painful?
Sports massage can sometimes feel intense, especially if muscles are tight or irritated. However, it should never feel unbearable. There’s a difference between “working discomfort” and pain.
Your therapist will regularly check in with you and adjust pressure as needed. Some mild soreness afterwards can be normal, particularly if the muscles have been tight for a while, but this usually settles within 24–48 hours.
How often should I have a sports massage?
This depends on your activity levels, goals, and whether you’re managing an injury.
-
For maintenance and general muscle health, many people benefit from a session every 4–6 weeks.
-
If you’re training heavily or recovering from injury, sessions may be recommended more frequently for a short period.
Your therapist will guide you based on your individual needs.
What should I wear during my massage?
Wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove or adjust. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to undress to your underwear. You will always be appropriately covered with towels to maintain privacy and comfort throughout the session.
If you’re unsure, feel free to ask before your appointment — we’re always happy to advise.
Is sports massage covered by insurance?
Some insurance plans do cover massage therapy, particularly if it’s prescribed as part of a treatment plan for injury or pain management. It’s always best to check with your insurance provider regarding coverage.
What other services do you offer?
In addition to sports massage, we offer a range of complementary treatments to support your overall health and wellbeing. These include chiropractic care, sports therapy, strength and conditioning, laser therapy, and physiotherapy. Our holistic approach ensures that we can cater to various needs, whether you’re seeking pain relief, rehabilitation, or preventative care.
