By Jessica Davy, Chiropractor

If I were asked what’s the most common thing you hear being a chiropractor, my answer would have to be “it’s because I’m getting old!” Sure, most of us have thought that to ourselves as we struggle to get out of a chair, start making groaning noises when we move, or use phrases like ‘oh crumbs’ (which I am 100% guilty of!) but how many of us understand our pain to be a normal part of aging and why don’t we do anything about it?

Getting older is a fact of life, it’s the one thing none of us can avoid despite all the lotions, potions and gadgets we use to fight it. At what age do we start accepting pain as a normal, expected part of our lives; when you find your first grey hair (I’m 25, I’ve recently found them and no, I’m not okay about it!) or when you reach a different milestone like having children, reaching a certain birthday or retirement? There is clearly no set time line that we all adhere to and not everyone experiences pain so why do we blame our age?

Getting older is not synonymous with increasing amounts of persistent and long term pain or discomfort, a controversial idea I know and there are ways that we can prevent and manage our pain levels. Just like laughter lines some aches and pains are unavoidable but aging doesn’t have to be a slippery slope. We should be asking ourselves;

  • Do I want to understand why I am experiencing this pain/discomfort?
  • Is this pain/discomfort stopping me from doing things that I want to?
  • Is this pain/discomfort affecting my mood and ability to cope?
  • Do I want to stop tolerating this level of pain/discomfort?

If you answered yes to any of the above, make an appointment with one of our chiropractors today so we can help you start to understand and manage your pain. Chiropractic treatment is available for everyone and we are all trained in a variety of techniques which allows us to tailor our treatments to your specific needs. Most commonly I use gentle joint mobilisations, massage and dry needling (a form of acupuncture) to get you moving before progressing into confidence building exercises.

Pain is not inevitable and it’s never too late to start working with us. We don’t mind if you’ve been living with pain for 5 weeks or 5 years, come in and let us help you get older with ease and confidence.

There is no age limit on living, and there is certainly no age limit on chiropractic care.
