Let's learn more about Jennifer
How did you first get interested in your field of work?
I have known for a long time that I wanted to work in healthcare. Through lots of shadowing and research, I could see that chiropractic had the perfect mix of diagnostic skills, hands on therapy as well as one-to-one rewarding conversations and interactions with people on a daily basis.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
I am passionate about supporting my patients in their recovery and helping facilitate reaching their goals from running a marathon to being able to walk to their local corner shop. There is no goal that is too small, and seeing someone get back to something they enjoy or reaching a milestone they have set is incredibly rewarding. When you are pain, whether that be in the short or long term, I appreciate the physical and psychological implications on a person’s life which makes supporting them even more fulfilling.
What’s a common misconception about your area of expertise that you’d like to clear up?
That we just crack backs! We look at the body as a whole, not just the back, and if you do not like the sound there is an array of other techniques that we can use. Your personal preference is very important to us. Additionally, guidelines suggest that manual therapy is one of a multitude of ‘tools’ in the ‘toolbox of care’. We also include lifestyle advice to include exercise prescription as well as nutritional and stress management advice.
How do you stay up to date with the latest developments in your field?
I am a member of the British Chiropractic Association and a licentiate member of the Royal College of Chiropractors. Both organisations put on regular CPD talks with up-to-date information relevant to the chiropractic profession. Social media has also become a big part of staying up-to-date. There are many researchers or fellow practitioners that summarise and share new research that has been released. This constant access to information also helps spark new areas of interest where further training can be done via in-person and online courses.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?
It can go one of two ways… I’m either jumping about at a dance class or snuggled up under a fluffy blanket with a nice smelling candle burning in the background!
What’s your go-to snack during the workday?
My mum makes amazing banana loaves and lemon cakes (amongst other things), so likely a slice of either with a coffee.
If you weren’t working in healthcare, what would you be doing?
Perhaps something creative. I taught myself to crochet in lockdown and I have always enjoyed water colour painting so maybe I’d have my own Etsy store or something similar.
